The security of RVs is just because they cost a lot. Plus the valuable things inside it and upgrading cost, all these things make a lot.

Your hard-earned money can be stolen in a form of RV, so, you have to know how to secure it from those who want to steal it.

There are many products available in the market which can secure your RV but there are many and you have to know which one is best.

Use this guide to protect the RV and make it more secure in a less secure campsite.

Why You Need an RV Security System?

First, it’s important here to know why you need an RV security system or even invest in it. You will be away from your home and friends in an unknown place surrounded by unknown people.

Inside your expensive RV, you will have also keep some valuable things and you will not stay in your RV all day long. You do not want Break-ins in your RV when you are away from it. After all, you are camping and will try to explore many things there.

You cannot trust random people and should invest some good money to secure it from bad people. It will give peace of mind and will let you enjoy your camping without tension.

Types of RV Security

1. Perimeter Systems

These systems are very good as you can have peace of mind while you are not around your RV. Perimeter systems are also called virtual fences as they are placed around your campsite and they create a virtual perimeter.

They can sound on an alarm or even notify you when someone trespasses the perimeter.

But there is a problem with it too, as it can also trigger false alarms. Like if a small animal such as squirrel or rodents crosses your perimeter. You can use this kind of system where the possibility of false alarm is nil. To keep your perimeter safe you can invest in a good security camera like this one that is charged with its own small solar panel. Security for RV is made easy through perimeter system.

2. Windows and door alarms

These are simple security alarms that can alert you when someone tries to open windows or the door of your RV. You can use them while you are sleeping or are away from RV.

They could give you a noise alarm or even send you an alert to your smartphone depending upon the setting and model. It’s better to install an alarm with a loud noise so that it works better, you know what I mean. A window and door alarm like this one here is of good quality and with 120 decible alarm sounds, that can scare anyone out.

3. Integrated System

These are the best security systems that you should try to install if you camp in an insecure place often. Here integrated means which has several safety nets and protection from other hazards such as burglaries, fire or carbon monoxide alarm.

Depending upon the model you can get a door or windows alarm, motion detectors, and storage compartment alarms and alerts straight to your smartphone if needed.

You can also be notified with a video feed and you can send it to law enforcement agencies for further investigation.  This is a safe investment with lots of features.

What To Look In a Security System?

Everyone need is different and so the need for a security system. So, what you should look in a security system, here are the points which can help you out:

1. It should protect RV and belonging

RV Security Tips

Whether you are a seasoned RV traveler or a new camper use these tips to keep your RV protected from theft.

1. How you park your RV

Many people park their RV in the wrong direction which makes them prone to stealing. They reverse their camper into the parking spot which is wrong. In this way, it is easy for you to drive off when you are ready to go home, but it is easier for a thief too.

To make it safe, turn your camper around and put the hitch away from the standard access. It will be a lot more difficult for the thieves as they have to turn the camper physically to drive it away.

It will take more time which they would not take. You can use a jockey wheel or tongue wheel to park in this method. You can also add a hitch and steering wheel lock to make it safer.

2. GPS Locator

It is a good idea to invest in a GPS locator if anyhow the RV gets stolen. Nowadays GPS locators are very small and can be hidden inside the trailer till you do not find it like this one, it is small as a deck of cards, can be hidden anywhere for over a month on a single charge.

You can get the location over text, call or email.

3. Use good locks

Choosing the right lock for your RV is important as there are varieties of locks available in the market. There are two popular locks which you should try.

You have to choose a lock which goes around the kingpin. Two locks that you should consider are cylinder lock and padlock. Both these locks go around the kingpin but cylinder lock has a mechanism that keeps it in the place. You can also use a coupler lock for RV and trailer like the one here.

You can even find cylinder locks that can only be unlocked by a special key and it cannot be duplicated too.

4. Cover the windows

One thing that you can do is to cover the windows so that no one can estimate what inside the RV.

5. Camp around other people

This is the coolest method to avoid any mishap as there is safety in numbers. If there will be people around your RV then there is hardly any chance that thieves can try to do something with your RV. Thieves always try to avoid the crowded area to steal.

6. Be safe with a safe

If you bring any valuable things with you then always bring a safe with you as you can keep your cash, credit cards and jewelry in it.

7. Cover the boot

Boot lock can cover the wheel and prevent it from been stolen. It can also protect the lug nuts. If the thieves cannot open the lug nuts then they cannot take out the wheels.

8. Explore the area where you are camping

It is always good to research the campground before stepping in it. You can find reviews about the camping site online which would help you to decide if it is safe enough to camp.

9. Park in a well-lit area

Another good idea is to park your RV in a well-lit area to avoid stealing. Whether you will stay for an hour or days, always leave your RV in a good place where the movement of people is more.

10. Hide you expensive items

If thieves cannot steal your RV that does not mean that they will not try to get inside it and will not run with your valuables. It is always better to hide expensive things or to carry them if possible.

11. Keep the interior lights open if you leave your RV

By keeping the interior lights open there is a possibility that thieves may not try to go near your RV. They will keep thinking that someone is inside the RV.

12. Put on music when you leave your RV

This is also a cool trick to fool the thieves as they will not take a chance to reach near your RV when music is on. Use this trick next time when you are leaving your RV.

13. Know the campers

By knowing your fellow neighbor campers you can make sure that your RV is safe. It is also good to make friends as they can have their set of eyes on your RV when you are away from it. But, make sure to know them fully as your neighbor can one of those who can steal too. Do not over-trust anybody.

14. Invest in a good security system

Investing in a good security system will always pay you back as you will have peace of mind while camping. This is all about camping is. A security system will secure your valuables and RV from the thieves.
