Why are airstreams so expensive?

The primary reasons for why Airstream are so expensive are three: Construction Material, Quality and Brand name.

Construction Material

The shell of the Airstream is made up of high-quality aircraft-grade aluminum. This aluminum is riveted over the steel frame from the outside and inside.

Aluminum is also used inside and in middle, there is an insulation material. The all-metal body and the labor cost to make the Airstream is the primary reason for its expensiveness.

Aluminum is durable and lightweight and at the same time costly. The silver bullet finish which is the signature look of the Airstream comes due to aluminum metal construction.

The body is not painted and it keeps it shining in all weather conditions.

Quality

Airstream does not compromise on the quality of their RVs. Every part of it is made carefully with hands. Inspection and quality check is the priority of the manufacturers.

From construction material to the furniture inside is of high quality which raises the price.

Brand Name

Airstream is a popular RV brand among people who admire its quality and durability.

These RVs are made by Americans in America which Airstream and its fans are really proud of.

An used Airstream have a good resale value which is not the case with most of the other brands.

Is an Airstream worth the money?

Airstream are worth the cost if you need a RV which is durable, looks great and is constructed with quality material.

Airstream RVs are costly because of the costly material used in them. Things like high-grade aircraft-grade aluminum used for the body do not come cheap.

From engine to tires are of high quality. Polyurethane caulk is used to make RV leak-free because silicone will not work with aluminum.

What is the cheapest Airstream?

Airstream Basecamp is the cheapest model starting at $39, 100 at the time of writing this article.  It has a length of 16’ to 20’ feet.

It is a lightweight and compact trailer that takes less space. It can be easily towable with a variety of mid-size SUVs. The large wheels are able to move better on roads and side skirts and wheel flares can prevent damage from gravel and debris.

You get option of 4 floorplans with sleeps up to 4 people. Plus it has lot of room for gear even if it is not so long.

How long do airstreams last?

According to the website colonialairstream.com over 70% of all Airstream ever made are still on road today and have 20% better fuel economy than towing a conventional box trailer.

Airstreams can last for 40 years or more compared to conventional trailers that last for 15 years or more.

The aluminum body is one of the reasons why Airstream trailers last longer. When you purchase a traditional trailer most of the time their body is made up of tin or iron which rusts over time and looks rugged and older.

The engine of the trailer may be in better condition than the body itself. Whereas the Airstream trailer body is made up of aluminum which does not rust (but is more prone to dent). Its engine will be in the same condition as the traditional trailer is.

“Airstream travel trailers from the 1930s are still on the road today. How? Because we build our products the right way – not the easy way.”

Do airstreams leak?

Yes, An Airstream can leak. Overtime with wear and tear the seals will wear down which can result in a water leak.

Airstream are known for their quality, with proper maintenance and care you can avoid leaks in future.

So, why the leak?

The answer is in the use. As people take their RV in hot sunny weather the sealant expands and in winter the sealant contracts which results in a crack over time.

When these seals wear down the water may slip down and leak inside. The rivet and edges are more prone to leak.

Can you walk on the roof of an Airstream?

Yes, Airstream says you can walk on the trailer’s roof as long as you are within the length of the awning rail. It is not recommended to walk beyond that as it can result in damage.

On the safe side, you can use a ladder and an extended brush to clean the roof. A metal roof is prone to dent compared to a rubber roof.
